Default my frank review of Yahoo

I feel that I have been treating Yahoo very improperly lately and favoring Google a lot. The truth is that Yahoo! was probably the first web site and search engine that I used when I first started using computers in sixth grade. I kept using it a lot everyday for something around three more years before finally shifting to Google. Yahoo was really attractive back in those days and offered a lot more than just a blank page and search engine. Remember few years ago, it wasn't much about design rather what and how much can you offer at once!

My first experience with Yahoo! was through the search engine and the Yahoo! Mail. It had a great mail system. At that time, Hotmail used to conquer the world with email but slowly Yahoo! mail was taking over and it finally did achieve it. A lot of hotmail users who I knew were moving to new Yahoo! mail but some stayed with Hotmail because it allowed them to use MSN messenger. My first mail was with Yahoo Mail but I had a hotmail id as well for chatting only.

The website started looking like a simple directory with lots of topics for people to look at. For example, in 1996, all it had on its page was a list of links (similar to a directory) and few logos. There was no Yahoo! Mail at that time and there was no Yahoo! Movies either. A lot of people, including me, talk about how Web 2.0 is all about being simple. Well if you think about it, Yahoo! was very simple at that time. However as time went by, it started become a little more complicated and started integrating a lot of stuff. If you go to Yahoo now, you can change the immense change since the day it started. There is Yahoo answers, movies, messenger, mail, 360 etc.

Where Google is primarily about being a search engine, Yahoo is about being everything and more importantly having everything on one single page. My most favorite part of Yahoo has always been yahoo movies. It has tons of information about all types of movies and I do mean tons and tons of it. No other site offers this amount of information. IMDB -Internet Movie Data Base- is threatening Yahoo Movies but I still think that Yahoo Movies is way more advances. IMDB is just a simple database where as Yahoo Movies has lots of images, posters, videos, trailers etc. Yahoo Movies is one of the most attractive and complex design that you will find on the Internet. I know tons of sites that have copied Yahoo Movies layout. Recently Yahoo also launched a gossip section called OMG (short for Oh My God!). Yahoo Movies lets me know accurate reports of Box Office and All Time Box Office. If you are in America, then you can easily check show times and ticket prices. You can find great reviews and images. However, the best part of Yahoo Movies is that you can find the latest trailers online. I just saw the trailer of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

Yahoo Mail was a big hit when it first came out. It offered lots of space compared to its competitor Hotmail. Everyone shifter to Yahoo Mail and got their account because you could use the same account to use it for Geocities (to create your own website!), Yahoo games and lots of other stuff all at once. Yahoo mail was attractive and very advanced at that time. With that much space available, people were able to send lots of images and documents as attachments to their friends and/or family members.

Overall, I have been very harsh with Yahoo but I would like to remind everyone, including myself, that Yahoo was one of the first Internet miracles. We all loved it before and though we have found a better alternative, we should not completely forget Yahoo and all that it has to offer.
