Default failure when converting to dynamic disk

Hello. I have a server running Windows 2003 Server Web edition. It's a brand new install. Relevant hardware is 2 identical ATA hard drives, 160GB each.

First thing I am trying to do is use disk mirroring for software raid across disk C and (unallocated) D (disk 0 and disk 1)

I right click on Disk 0 (C) in the Top disk list, select "Convert to Dynamic disk". I select just Disk 0 at first for now and it shows confirmation that it contains "System Partition", "Boot Partition", "Active Partition". Hit OK, it gives an error when it tries to unmount, and the disk goes Offline.

Disk 1 is still around, but is unallocated. I try and reboot and of course the server's dead. (It's at a hosting company that only provides hardware support and OS reloads)

This has happened 2 times now, and I don't want it to happen again. I know what I'm doing is possible - we've got another 2003 box with a mirrored 80gb drive from the same hosting company.

My question is - can you run the disk management tools from the boot volume (C), and convert it into a dynamic drive while it runs? If not, does it require console access to do this (I am doing via remote desktop)?

Any help is very much appreciated!!

I have followed the knowledgebase articles as best I can.

    Hello
I converted a hard disk from basic to dynamic running
under window XP. I was asked to reboot my computer to
complete the conversion. However, upon reboot, the disk
became unreadable, giving the following error message:

    "missing or corrupt file: c:windows/system32/hal.dll"

The error message is a little misleading since not only is
that file not accessible, but the entire disk is
    unreadable.

So far, I have tried several methods to no avail. I have
even installed a new hard drive into this computer and
installed windows 2000 on the new hard drive in the hope
that I would be able to access the old hard drive.
However, under the disk management tool, the old hard
    drive appears as "Dynamic Unreadable".

I am aware that converting the dynamic unreadable drive
back to basic will probably destroy all the data on it.

Any ideas on what I can do to recover data on my old drive?

    Please HELP!!!!!

Convert basic disk to dynamic can be realized through the disk management directly and without any data, but when convert dynamic disk to basic disk through the disk management can’t guarantee the data security. So, we should find 3rd software to finish the operation and guarantee the data security. Here, remain you all, in order to know how to deal with it when we face latter.
