Thread: Directories, Files, Folders, Document... Do they mean the same thing?

In an earlier question about uploading a file to Filezilla, I got a number of very helpful replies, but now I am wondering: Do the terms Directories, Files and Folders mean the same thing with reference to uploading a File to Filezilla?

I suspect that they do... and on the other hand, I suspect that a "document" is something that has not been placed in a file. Is that correct?

This puzzle is important to me since the first webpage I uploaded to Filezilla successfully was just a simple html document (not a file or folder). Am I doing something unusual?

I need to clear up these terms since I now want to upload new web pages and don't know what format to use.... a folder, or a html document or whatever. Can you help me clear this up?

Directory = Folder
Document = File

Sometimes File is used in the sense of Folder, but usually a file = document.

You can think of it that way:
Directory / Folder - You put stuff into them. A directory can contain files AND other directories. A directory DOES NOT HAVE extensions
Document / File / Data - Contains data like text, code, imagecode etc. They also have file extensions like .html (a HTML page) .jpeg (a image file) .png (image file) .exe (executable file).

So, if you want to organize, lets say, images you could make a directory that is called "images" and then put your image files into this directory.

This are basics of a computer, did you not know this?
