Social bookmarking sites are sites which you only submit your interesting links/which are commonly interesting articles and wait if it will going to send you some traffic...while on social networking you'll going to participate on the discussion and brought up some resources about the conversation/topic that is relevant to yours site perhaps and that way you'll get some traffic...

In Social networking, we can create networks and groups and can make new friends.
But Social bookmarking is all about making bookmarks and can have vote for them.

sort of a branch of social networking?: Good Point. Yeah,some big social networking do have social bookmarking service BUT there are difference in term of listing style.

Social bookmarking sites are sites that allow you to submit your site where as social network is a network.

Facebook
MySpace
Twitter

Examples of Social Bookmarking Sites are:
Yahoo Buzz
Diggs
Stumbles

Essentially social bookmarking sites are meant as a platform for sites imho where as social network are meant for members to build their network imo.
