SEO and SMM are thought of as opposites, or so I've heard. Isn't there any way these two can be complementary to each other?

you do SMM for increasing your site's visibility and popularity. when you get popularity then your get well ranking in search engines. so they are linked with each other.

SEO and SMM are not opposite but they are sides of the same coin called internet marketing.

Social Media Marketing is very better way for SEO.

SEO deals with how search algorithms work and what people search for in search engines while SMM deals with marketing and promotion of website through social media sites for the purpose of gaining links, authority, traffic and ROI.
