Finding a profitable niche is like finding a gold mine. It involves lot of hard work, analysis, skills to detect profitable keywords.

Here are some non-conventional ways to find keywords that could be a candidate for profitable keywords:
Look at websites for sale
When people sell websites they generally don't tell you their keywords but they tell you how much they make. Finding their keywords is easy, just visit the website and look at the front page content, title, meta description, and meta keywords you will get the idea.

Amazon, Ebay and such...
Choose categories and look at the most popular products (higher rates). Look at the title of those products, then do research on Google Keyword Tools. Also check by searching on Google whats the SERP volume and if lot of people advertising for it.

Billboards
If you are on the road watch them. People are putting them there, since they are earning some money from them. In many cases billboards advertise niches or products with high profit margins. Check those niches and keywords from the billboards if they are any good really.

TV Ads
People pay big bucks to advertise on television. People who can afford that, earn good as well. Check out the type of ads plays most. For example "credit repair service". Follow how many people advertising for that; if more people advertising it, that means the market is big and there are good profits.

In all cases you should look at two things when you do further research:
1. search volume
2. if there are lot of people advertising online

The point about billboards is best. Usually they put keywords that they want people to remember so that they can go home and search for them, so those keywords that the company is using on the billboard has to be strong and important ones.

aha, another trip. when I was studying engineering I hardly had time to eat for first two years. you guys are lucky having all those nice field trips with friends.
