Anyone can get a number one position in Google for an obscure keyword with no competition, but it won't help your business in the slightest. The claims an SEO company makes must have highly relevant meaning that can advance your business, otherwise why bother?
2. Don't be afraid to ask an SEO company to provide some evidence that they have had success promoting other businesses. In fact, any good company will be falling over themselves to show you the evidence. If an SEO company seems reluctant to prove that they have already successfully done what they claim they can do for you, be extremely wary.
3. Determine exactly what you will receive for the money you are asked to pay. Make sure that everything is listed in detail, and that you are happy to pay for what they state they will deliver. Shop around. Don't be afraid of trying to get the best deal you can, and if an SEO company fumbles about what you will be getting for your money, go somewhere else. In fact, a good SEO company will usually over deliver. You will often get more than you expected as a measure of goodwill, and of their efficiency.
4. Don't just leave everything up to the SEO company. Keep abreast of what is going on and monitor what is happening. Expect to receive feedback in the form of regular reports. Check for yourself that what is claimed to be happening is actually happening.
5. 5. Only accept an SEO company that offers excellent communications with you. It's OK to use a company that is remote, but only if you have several good and reliable way of contacting them. It's probably best to use an SEO company that you can actually visit in person, but this is not absolutely necessary.

Before hiring an SEO expert, we recommend the following items:

• The best time to hire an SEO expert?
• The experience of the SEO expert or organization?
• What services they offer.
• What guarantee, if any, is offered?
• What do I get for the money?
• What methods of search engine optimization do they utilize?
• Their references and past results?

• Do they promise to guarantee #1 ranking? If they do, you have a serious reason to doubt their competencies. As the say, no one can guarantee a #1 ranking in Google. This is true even for not so competitive words.
• Get recommendation from friends, business partners, etc. Word of mouth is very important for the credibility of a company.
• Ask in forums. There are many reputable Web master forums, so if you can't find somebody who can recommend you a SEO company right away, consider asking in Web master forums. However, beware that not all forum posters are honest people, so take their opinion (no matter if positive or negative) with a grain of salt. Forums are not such a reliable source of information as in-person contact.
• Google the company name. If the company is a known fraudster, chances are that you will find a lot of information about it on the Web. However, lack of negative publicity does not mean automatically that the company is great, nor do some subjective negative opinions mean that the company is a scammer.
• Ask for examples of sites they have optimized. Happy customers are the best form of promotion, so feel free to ask your potential SEO company about sites they have optimized and references from clients. • Do they use automated submissions? If they do, stay away from them. Automated submissions can get you banned from search engines.
• Do they use any black hat SEO tricks? You need to know in advance what black hat SEO is in order to judge them, so getting familiar with the most important is worth before you go and start cross-examining them.

I believe the most important item would be the ranks of the SEO company because if they are claiming to know a lot about the net, their ranks too could be very great.
