How To Do Manual Directory Submission?
There is a lot of work involved with doing your own manual directory submissions but if you are intent on doing it all yourself it is possible.
To do directory submissions you first have to choose the directories you want to submit to.You will end up with a long list; if you take this seriously, you understand that submitting to 5-10 web directories is not nearly enough to receive some good links…250+ sounds more like it.There are thousands of web directories, some of them are general and include all types of sites, whilst others only list websites of a particular type or category.
One of the things you will be looking for when picking the web directories is if they have a category suitable for your service. If you have no idea at all how to start, type ‘web directories’ in the larger search engines, such as Google or Yahoo look for the names that will come up and start with these.Wikipedia also provides a list of general and specialist web directories.
Listing all the directories that you think will work for you, remember to check if they are SEO-friendly.Don’t even bother to look into web directories that are not SEO-friendly as they will lead you nowhere.Don’t forget to confirm and verify the links; they should link straight to your web-site and if that is not a case, you can consider them useless.
Now you have a list of web directories suitable for your web-site and SEO friendly, the next thing to do is to do the actual manual directory submissions. We already spoke about the importance of appropriate categories; submit your website to directories that contain the correct category for your product or service.
Each directory has a form to be filled in when submitting your site. There are quite many details the directories ask for and most forms ask for the same kind of information. We have to say a few words about guidelines here: directories vary and so do their rules or guidelines so it is obviously in your best interest to get acquainted with these guidelines to make sure that your manual directory submission gets accepted.
Not all web-directories work in the same way.Web directories free of charge might seem very appealing to your wallet they sometimes contain a payment option too.Depending on your needs and wishes, you can pay once a year, through a subscription every month or decide to pay the entire amount at once.Paid submissions obviously guarantee an fast service; you can expect your submission to be considered rapidly and you are likely to get a link on a good position in the directory. If you don’t want to spend any money on submissions, you can go for free web directories. The reviewing time here will range from days to months.
The form will ask you for a few more details. The titles to start with, keep it short and simple, but try to sum up the concept of the web-site.If you struggle with the right length of your title; 45 characters is a good average; more than 55 characters is too long. You probably know that the URL is your homepage.Your site must be complete before you can even think about submitting, meaning you should at least have an up-and-running domain and substantial content. You can be sure to be rejected
You will have to compose a good description; this field is not to advertise your site but to describe in a neutral way what your site is about. It is always a good idea to use the same words in your description one might use in a search engine but again, depending on the guidelines, a directory will only allow you a certain amount of characters.
Evidently, the web directories can’t do anything if they don’t have your name and an email account.A hotmail or a gmail account is not very professional and will probably be rejected by web directories; ideally, you have an email address that is related to your web-site.
Many directories will not accept automated submissions. As the websites are manually reviewed there would just be far too many for them to cope with.To prevent this directories give a code that you have to manually type in to confirm your request.
If you are interested in a reciprocal link, although there is no good reason to, you can select that option in the form. This is not required but if for some reason you decide to link back; fill out the Reciprocal URL field. In order to fill out this field, you will have to insert a link to the directory on your website and then paste your URL into the ‘Reciprocal URL field on the form.
By now, you probably understand how dull and time consuming this entire submission process can be.Once you have done it, it’s not even guaranteed you will get approval as the web-site has to go through a manual review and web directories have strict listing guidelines. You can easily outsource your directory submissions to a professional manual directory submission service; they have a team of experts acquainted with all the guidelines and will go through the time-consuming process for you at a reasonable price.

nice article I must say. I spend about 1000$ two years ago for one of my sites buying directory links. now I don't do the paid ones, rather do the free ones.

thanks

I'm not going to say that paid dirs have no value, because some do and not only the few big ones, many paid dirs out there that ask just $1-$5, which they're probably worth. but then the problem is that you need to check the page where your link would be listed first, if you end up on page 2-3 of your sub-category, it's probably not worth the money ... so, assuming you have a perfect list of 100 paid dirs, then it's worth it, but of course to get that list is such a huge job ...
then ... for $100 we can do 500 submissions to free directories, what can you get from paid dirs for just $100, especially if you're fair enough with yourself to consider your own time as a cost ...
so, as concluded in my article ... just order 500-1000 subs from a company and move on to other tactics, there so many options out there, no point wasting time and money by repeating over and over again just 1 of the tactics. varaiation is the key in link building ... my 2 cents
cheers,
Michiel
