Thread: What is meant by minus 6 penalty ?

Anyone here know what is meant by minus 6 penalty by google ? I got a mail stating that I was penalized by minus 6 penalty. What does that mean ?

Haha , A minus 6 penalty just means that your site is showing up 6 spots lower than it COULD show up, if you didnt have that penalty. So, your site might be a #1 quality site, but with a -6 penalty it shows up at #7 instead. Gotta be careful when you are doing SEO.

If a website ranks at #1 on google and if google found that website used some blackhat technique or bad practice to reach #1, google will de-promote them to #6.

According to google, a website ranked at #6 on the first page gets least attraction. So they penalize the website at #1 to #6. This is called as minus 6 penalty.

When your long term webpages rank on #1 or #2,suddenly rank at #6, this is called minus 6 penalty.

Why Google implemented the minus 6 penalty

Most of you have probably heard about the minus 6 penalty where people with number 1 rankings have moved down to number 6.
The interesting thing to me about all these penalties (previous ones were minus 30 and minus 950) is how does Google chose what number to use?
My theory, to be taken with a pinch of salt, is that 6th place gets the least clicks out of any result in the first 10.
6th place is right in the middle of the page and we know doesn’t get a lot of clicks because of the leaked AOL data. Also 6th place is right on the fold of most screens so is easily missed when people scroll down. 6th place is also the lowest result to still have Adwords to the right hand side of it.
