2. Join discussion forums, support and professional online groups and make posts containing a link to your site
3. Ask your friends to add links to your pages on their own sites
4. Call site owners and local companies you do business with to add a link to your site
5. Call websites that you find showing up high in search results to add a link to your site, even if they compete with you

And pray that they will do add your link but most probably no they won't if it ain't paid.

4 and 5 might be worth looking into. A backlink is a banklink, and getting one on a high ranking site is never a bad thing.

Article submission is also one easy way to get backlinks. Ezinearticles, hubpages.com, articledashboard are the excellent article submission source.

Nice tips mit. I'd also recommend to definitely Digg your site, and submit it to PR5+ directories, most likely a featured site wide link.

2-4 are good I would say.
#1 does not work 99% time. press people does not care about small timers.
#5 won't work since a competitor would never really link another; thats charity

press releases is good for BL how about classifieds and blog commenting can they help also as BL?

Probably, they won't accept your offer once they have found out that your site is their competitor...
