    you have to use a 410 redirection on each webpage. But it's no big deal if you don't because google won't penalize you for that.

    You have an option on Google Webmaster tools to remove certain URL from Google's index to avoid 404 error pages. Follow these steps

    Google Webmaster Tools->Site configuration->Crawler Access->URL Removals->Create a new removal request

    Enter the URL that gives 404 response in the text box and submit.

    For temporary solution you can redirect those pages to some of your main category pages in your site.

    Also, 404 pages will disappear automatically from Google Webmaster tools after a certain length of time anyway.

    Check broken links on your entire website with the help of Xenu software. Remove all broken links from server. If want to keep all broken link as a record on your server simply create a folder and place all broken link on folder then disallow that folder on robots.txt file.

    After that create a new xml sitemap and update it on your webmaster tool.

    I hope it will be helpful for you.

    There can be several reasons which show 404 pages in webmaster. First the links present on your website point to wrong URL which doesn't exist in your page. So if Google crawler finds around 10000 links with incorrect URL, it would show 10000 404 errors that doesn't mean that you have any problem in your website but you have invalid links present on web page which needed to be correct.

    You should use 301 redirection(permanent redirection) for broken URLs or 404 errors.

    It would be a great idea to redirect 404 page to its relevant page or Home Page.
