Canonical links help search engines resolve duplicate content problems by letting them know which of the web pages is the original or the best so they know which to give credit to. These links are also called 'preferred links'.

Canonical Links are those link which are adjacent to each other but Search Engines have to read it Separately! For Instance "www and non www" Your Site homepage have same URL but crawler finds two URLs one with www and second without www!! To overcome this issue you have to came up with 301 Root Redirect!
Conical Tags are Those tags which is placed in Meta to determine that your site have fresh and unique content!

Canonical is an adjective derived from canon. Canon comes from the greek word kanon, "rule" or "measuring stick" (perhaps originally from kanna "reed", cognate to cane), and is used in various meanings.

Canonicalization is a process for converting data that has more than one possible representation into a “standard” canonical representation.
So, Canonical + URL (Uniform Resource Locator) = Duplicate Content = More supplemental results = less Google lovin’
Examples of Canonical URL’s are:
webbience.com/
www.webbience.com
webbience.com/index.html
www.webbience.com/index.html
And many more combinations!
So, how to clean my Canonical URL, so I get one URL representation only?
Well, you can edit your .htaccess file in the root of your site and add these lines if you want your site to use www:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^example\.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.example.com/$1 [R=301,L]
Then upload it.
That’s it.
No more extra ice cream, err! pesky duplicate content on your websites... lol

Canonical means reduced to its simplest form. In this context it means it allotment a reference to the actual same String object itself, which will be a reference to one of the internally pooled String objects.
