What if the site I want to exchange my link with is not related with my niche?

It does not matter what niche it has, you must be interested in the other site's PR.

There is no problem in link exchange with a different theme website. But you get less value from a different niche as compared when you exchange link with a similar theme website.

Relevancy is important for search engine because the main aim of search engine is provides most relevant search results of internet user.
Theme based and relevant link is important as compared to non thematic link.

PR is one of the most important things then relevancy.

To add relevancy, add your key words in your link (or next to it).

Exchanging links in relevant site is the most important; you will get high value for this, but if you will exchange in irrelevant site there is no wrong thing about this but you will only get low value..somehow if its PR is good then go for it...

Yes it doesn't make any difference but remember you are exchanging link then exchange with sites of high PR.

So strictly don't go for link exchange that are only for increasing backlinks without considering the niche.

It will consider as a back link . So as per SEO back link is matter alot in ranking . Make sure your using your keywords in anchor text while putting link on diff niche websites .
