Steps on starting your forum posting:

1) Find a host
2) Sign up for a domain name and hosting account.
3) Go to your hosts cPanel or free program area and find SMF. More than likely there will be an "install" button... click it and follow the directions.
4) As long as everything was completed, you should now have a forum. Now you should be able to go to yourdomain.--- and start working on your forum.

I don't agree with this. Not only back links, i got so much information relating to my site and SEO also from forum postings. By reading the forums i got so much knowledge of most of the topics over the network.

You should first find a good forum site and then start to share and gather some useful information from that site, if the site allows signature with links then it's a plus for you if you have a website to optimize.

Start your forum with relevant answer and get some post like 10 to 15 post than you can put signature links. Some forums gives you signature links after some post, some after some times, and some one give you signature links from your first post.
