I think Google does not know the difference between brand name keywords and generic keywords, Google consider both are equal.

Keyword selection completely depends on the scale of the popularity of your business.
For an online business to flourish you need both, Generic keywords and Brand names as well.

A new business website has to optimize for keywords, because there is very few percentage of audience that can recognise a business with its brand names. For big and well established brands, however, you can get away away with Generic keyword optimization.
