Bounce rate defines that how many visitors stay at website and how many visitors just go out of website. 50% bounce rate defines that your 50% of visitors are not staying too much time of website and they are not even reading your site so try to keep it low as much as possible.

To tell if your bounce rate is good or not, there are more details we would need to know. Your bounce rate is very dependent on your industry and how your website is constructed.

50% bounce rate means that half of your traffic to your site are leaving immediately. If you worked hard to get that traffic then you really should try to get them to stay on your pages longer. Maybe your site is not targeted for these visitors, you can see what keywords they are searching and then create content relevant for these visitors.

50% is moderately good for a site but check the duration of staying. Well if they stay longer than to read an article then it's all right but if they leave up instantly then you should improve your content quality.

Bounce rates depends on the traffic sources the page stickiness w.r.t to users. Also if your site has textual info with cluttered lay out then it might increase bounce rates. Direct and SEO source has the lowest bounce rate while Adwords SEM has the highest bounce rate even if your landing pages are well designed. Referral source bounce rates can be high to higher (depending on relevancy of partner sites)
Ideally bounce rates for SEO should not be more than 20% to 25% (provided you are targeting relevant core keywords)
Anything that goes beyond 35% is not good and alarming signal TO RECONSIDER usability factors in the site. So if you increase your Adwords budget for a particular month then bounce rates of the site for that month would increase.Kiranatama is a Ruby on Rails Developer for developing your business through iphone app development , android app development, ipad app development, and blackberry app development

Bounce Rate - The number of visitors who came to your site and never clicked over to a different page within your site.
The amount of time a visitor spends on your site – usually anything under 5 seconds counts towards your bounce rate.
Lower bounce rate is usually great – you are doing a lot of things right.
Higher bounce rate – you need to start thinking about increasing the “Sticking Power” of your site.

Bounce rate depends on type of site you own. If its affiliate site then 50% sounds good. If you have your own products to sell or content based site may be ideal will be around 35% bounce rate. There always chance to improve but need proper analysis to decide. AB testing is another part for making more desire results.
