One important thing is the linking. If you have a lot of friends (with high traffic) who wouldn't mind linking your website on their website, so you're gonna have more visitors.
Of course I agree that the content is very important. If there is nothing interesting for visitors so the wouldn't visit your website more than once. But if your website has something interesting for them and always UPDATED, so it could be more interesting for people

Personally, my website's traffic is coming mostly from my friend's links page, that's why I suggested it at first

It depends on your website. If have a blog or something like that, digg.com is a good way. It takes time and effort if you want alot of traffic.
