Next to W3Schools as another member has previously suggested, Lynda's Tutorials would be something you should definitely check out. Visual tutorials and trying out the code hand in hand is one experience that will prove quite effective for aspiring web programmers.

W3Schools is best for learning php language but if you want to learn it for seriously then you have to find video tutorials on YouTube. There you can find lots of video tutorials about php and i hope you will success in your life. Please don't waste time. download video tutorials and study that for you.

You may find dozens of classic learning resources online however the best possible way to learn any programming language is to start with a simple application and write code for it. Initially you will end up re-writing code number of times and you'll have to refer books or online resources for cross checking the syntax however you'll learn a lot faster this way than reading books or tutorials. If you get stuck somewhere then there are some wonderful Q&A sites like stackoverflow.com where you can get your doubts clarified, be it syntax related or anything else related to programming or logic.

Do not think of books as a purely academic source of information.
The good thing I have found about the books published by WROX, O'Reilly, SAM is that they take you, step by step, through a number of real life coding examples. So, you code as you read and build upon your code with each chapter. IMHO, this approach is much better than online tutorials or YouTube videos since it is a structured approach that builds on existing knowledge as you take each step forward.
I'm not saying that online tutorials or YouTube videos do not have place in learning, just that if you want to get a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of php, then you need to go about the task in an organised fashion.
