Well, there is php.net of course to get a general idea of what the functions do.
But to really get started you need to set yourself a simple project and think how you would go about solving it.
Then you can ask question on forums, (here, USENET, and others), slowly you will learn how to use php.
There are some books, but php has a great community of people to help you.
All you need is a project to get yourself started.

tutorials just provide you with code on how to do various things with php ... you first need to have an understanding of programming and programming concepts otherwise you will be lost... the tutorials are like an introduction to a workshop they will tell you what a hammer is for or what a saw is for but they wont tell you how to build a chair...

Follow the following steps.
1. Think PHP as HTML code generator and start with PHP echo command.
2. Try to use PHP include statement to join pages.
3. Try a simple project like website contact form with PHP.

HI
If you learn PHP before you learn about HTML because it’s a basic understanding of HTML, You can switch between PHP and HTML right in the same document and run PHP from an HTML. While creating a php page to be used same programs in HTML.
