While I do agree about Typography being a large part of design and art, there's really only so much that can be done to make typography look decent and good in the actual web design. It's more used for artwork and fancy scripts. Using it on an entire webpage would be rather unattractive if you're using a high effect font.

Typography is basically just toggling with different fonts, spaces, sizes, ect of text to come up with a certain visual effect. If you run a Google search for it you should pull up some nice picture results. I feel that typography is a growing and important part of the design industry. However, I feel how much and what kind all depends on the individual site and it’s needs. Some need fancy footwork when it comes to text and others just need the good ole basics.
