You can do some link baiting for your site. You can offer some pretty nifty stuffs such as free products or discounts or some prizes for some sort of contest.

You can create an account in social networking websites, make friends and promote your web resource in that way.

these are basically the most common way sof getting traffic. Like Mit pointed out, you can also do contests but that will only give you short term traffic.

RSS feed submission is also good source of generating traffic for the website.

i'm very agree with your opinion, contest is the effectibve way to drive traffic since many people is love to compete for a prize

I thinking blogging will be the most source of traffic if you'll going to focus and optimize it well..cause this are updated and has fresh contents which users love the most and SE's though fairly good if your site is will going to have contest perhaps in order to attract people..

One technique I have been implementing to help others get traffic is putting up their banners on my 40 proxy network. It really exposes their site to many users, and its like using adwords in many ways.
