Environmental scanning means to analyse all the internal as well as external factors so as to know about the strength and weaknesses for the company or firm.

The process of continually acquiring information on events occurring outside the organization to identify and interpret potential trends

A systematic method of looking for drivers that influence the future. The process can be passive or active, continuous or occasional. "Environmental" here is not restricted to the natural environment, but covers all types of environment - see PINCHASTEM. Often abbreviated to just scanning.
