How to build yourself as an expert
Some great tips here to build yourself as an expert in a niche. Of course this is not a fit-for-all recipe. Use these as basis techniques and add your very own technique on top of these.
Know the latest news
When everyone is talking about something that is happening you need to be on top of it. Any expert knows what is happening in their area of expertise all the time.
Stay up-to-date on changes
When something changes you need to know about it or else you could go around spreading information that is outdated and just not correct. That would be quite damaging to your reputation.
Don’t publish junk information
Make sure everything that you put your name on or otherwise associate with is high quality. Avoid junk and hype at all costs.
Know how to present information
You need to present information in a way that looks professional and conveys that you know what you are talking about.
Do research on important topics
You should do research on important topics in your niche. If you need to know more in order to talk about something then do not be afraid to look it up.
Provide your readers with information
Let people know what you know. Give your readers an idea of what makes you an expert by telling them what you know.
Teach
Teach others what you know. You can give structured classes or simply just share your knowledge through lessons on your website that is available to visitors.
Talk at your reader’s level
You want to avoid using too many complex words and talking above your readers head. You should also avoid talking down to your reader. Just talk with simple, everyday language and you should be fine.
Be open to new ideas
Be ready to accept changes and learn about new ideas. You will need to make sure that you are willing to accept new things and start incorporating them into expert knowledge.
Let others talk about you
Get other people to talk about you and refer to you as an expert. Make sure the people you let back you are professional and well respected themselves.Free Classified Ads & BUSINESS/PROFESSIONAL SOCIAL NETWORK

The best part is "talk according to your reader’s mind level". This is very important to know about your audience, as if you know that your audience has technical education then use terms and terminologies according to them and if your audience is managerial then talk according to their mindset. This will increase your value and make your good image in minds of others.

Those are some great tips! I believe anyone who creates a blog to teach what they know is automatically branding themselves as an expert in that subject matter and is on their way to building a long term following. I'm an average trumpet player, but started a blog called JazzTrumpetLicks.com. I know get all kinds of people calling me their teacher and master in some cases.
It just feels good to teach others what I've learned over the years.

It's good that an old thread as valuable as this has been dug up and resurrected. Kudos to the person who first replied to this thread, even if your username's houston owner. At least, you've given this thread the attention that its deserves. Anyway, the whole point of those tips is to open yourself up to the people who you think will follow you. By opening yourself, I meant sharing your thoughts and all that. Another thing would be the communication side of things. You wouldn't be able to call yourself an expert if you're not sharing anything out there or trying to communicating to people by sharing your stuff.

I’d like to think I’m an expert in quite a few things. The guys on CNBC and writing at the Wall Street Journal might also like you to think they are experts. Maybe they are. Maybe I am. I have never taken a course in personal finance. Maybe they haven’t, either. Certification helps – CPA, JD, etc. – but often we assume people are experts because of the way they talk, or dress or because other people tell us they are. But let’s assume we’re talking about “real” experts – people who do understand a particular subject.
