    Default Starting up in Marketing

    Hi there guys,

I have just graduated from university (marketing major) and am starting in a few weeks at a small IT company. My main tasks will involve building up of the marketing efforts of that company.

The thing that is a little bit worrying (at least at first sight) to me is the fact that this small company has never really had any specific marketing so far. Their products have been selling without any efforts (as they are the market leader in reselling SSL-certificates for Internet security). And now with an ongoing competition, they have decided to start acting marketing oriented..And picked me to do this.

Even though that I have gone through two marketing interns, this thing here is new to me. I have had my majors classes during my studies in Product management, media planning, e-business and marketing research, but that seem to me still not to be the same like building up such a thing.

Anyway, it's done - I took the challenge and I'm starting soon.
So, my starting point I think should be the development of a marketing plan - they don't have one now. I think, without having that plan, most of the other efforts cannot really run smoothly.

But before I start developing it, I think that I need to get a general understanding what their products are like, target groups, what their sales projections are like for the upcoming 6 months to 1 year and so on.
They have a whole range of SSL-certificates that are selling well, where they need to retain their positions, and other products that need to be promoted (because are rather unknown so far).

So what do you think, am I on the right track?

Thanks a lot guys and hope to hear from you!

    Regards,
    D

Yes you are on the right right track. Your determination to make it work is enough and then employ the plans you have, i think everything will work out well.

Build Up Your Own Profile. Many of the most-talked-about startups are run by people who are high profile. These are people who work very hard to build their own personal profiles and brands. They’re promoting themselves as a means of promoting their companies. Focus on building trust, reputation and thought leadership, even at a small scale, and you’ll see results. This is the better way to starting up in marketing.

    Hi guys!

Thanks a lot for your nice words and support, I really think that this might work.

However, if we address the current situation with something more specific rather than just relying on one's own determination to perform the things I had already listed before, and also get involved some key elements such as "business plan", "marketing plan", "SWOT", "BCG", then how could the situation look like? Maybe we might find out something a little more specific that could really be The starting point.

For example, should we take the business plan and the SWOT as the start for the developement of the marketing plan? If you can't see the whole picture, then how could you change anything? That business plan must be the desired state of the whole company, while the SWOT should be the current situation. So, we need to bridge them - and here should come the mkt plan I guess. Any sense in those last sentences?

And for example, analyzing the product portfolio might be a starting key element in the whole mkt plan later as well. So using the BCG maybe could be a good way to understand the products and how they develop. But can you do it just based on roughly assumptions about your market share and growth or you may need some special software?

Lots of question marks, but still I think I might find the answers to them. And I am really grateful to all of you for every single idea or word of advice!

    Take care,
    D

Dude just go forward as you're in the right track. Don't be bias and just do where you get your mental pleasure. Online marketing seeks some times and lots of patience. So get adjusted with this environment.
