Directory submission is nice way to increase back links. Its long term way but most effective....

I submit the link to about 400 directories but only about 40 approved. Why?

It may be because most of the directories you submitted to are of poor quality and have been abandoned by their owners. This is quite common with free directories.

when I'm doing directory submission, i only pick directory sites that have more PR1 so that I'm sure that Search Engines can crawl my links...

Directory submissions had their 'day in the sun' about a decade ago (think DMOZ). I imagine with Web 2.0 technologies any type of directory is irrelevant to anything more than maybe minimal PR improvement. I mean really, who visits a 'directory' to find information they're seeking? :-)

As comparing with directory submission, I would prefer press releasing and article submission more since they would help more for back linking purpose and also on traffic.

Directory submission nowadays doesn't have the same value as before, Search engine before gives this technique more value than today..Why? I think because some are just submitting and spamming a directory..

I think you should just do submissions in top class | good directory sites.
