Thread: China Cracking Down Fake Drug Websites

China, beset by food and drug safety scandals, has blacklisted dozens of websites for making false claims about traditional Chinese medicine.

The health scares, including the addition of melamine, used in making plastics, to milk and baby formula, have prompted many countries to close their markets to Chinese food and drugs, and Beijing is trying to restore the reputation of its exports with a quality drive.

The 74 websites, most of them targeting Chinese consumers, sell drugs for high blood pressure, diabetes and tumours. Some feature testimonials from western doctors and medical companies.

Traditional Chinese medicine is widely used in Asia and could become more integrated in western national health systems, the World Health Organisation said last month.

Many of the websites, some featuring photos of nurses clad in white lab coats and gleaming hospitals, are still accessible and selling their "cures," despite the ban.

Only websites licensed by China State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) are authorised to sell drugs online to individuals.

"So far, only 10 websites across China have been issued with the licence," Xinhua quoted Yan Jiangying, spokeswoman for the SFDA, as saying.

The state-owned Xinhua news agency pointed out on Wednesday that the sites could be shut down by the government, but had not been. China's internet police have broad powers to block or shut any sites deemed to have subversive or pornographic content.

Selling drugs online....the internet is becoming such a hideous place. It used to be so safe and peaceful here...

I agree - could've not said it any better

Blocking these sites is a good thing. But in general I don't like their Internet policy. They block the sites they wanna stop competiting with. Whereas they been getting huge business from all over the world!

What we would do without money

Ive always thought about how the world would function if there was no such thing as money. It all sounds good in my brain, and then it becomes such a hectic world that its hilarious.

Many businesses flourishes on internet which are illegal and making uncountable money through it.

Wow...this is serious crime and I am glad that Chinese govt is taking serious steps regarding it.

Fake medicines can lead to several deaths.

Money minded people are not thinking about anybody's life they are just thinking about their own profits.

Though, It's quite hard to do that, at least the China government doing their part and take action.Hope every country do that, be united!It's our health risk.Thank you for the information you post.

I think that it is a great idea that china is cracking down but they have to be consistant about it and not let anyone slip through the cracks.
