Thread: How to Check Supplier Product Pricing if Profitable : E-Commerce

It sounds easy, really is, to check pricing of a product to sell if its profitable. Just need some commonsense. Yet many do mistake in this.

After you get the wholesale price list from your prospective supplier, find out how much others are selling for that exact same item.

Some good places to check pricing:

• Ebay.com
• Amazon.com
• Overstock.com
• Walmart.com

Many people selling on these sites (except walmart) are suppliers. Since its very competitive there prices are lower there. You really have to make sure you are able to compete with those sellers there.

Your sell price should consist of these parts:

• wholesale price
• shipping cost (if you offer free shipping)
• listing/success fees (if you sale on ebay/amazon etc where you have to pay for listing/success)
• Operational costs (this could be hosting, office supplies etc)
• Marketing expenses (marketing costs like ppc etc)

Based on this see how many percentage of profit you can make per product. If you make less then 25% profit, I would strongly recommend looking for some other supplier.

The most important step in e-commerce is picking the right market. You can’t just go set up a store, throw in a bunch of unrelated products, and expect people to flock there. A “build it and they will come” mentality is not the way to go. Let’s not dwell on what not to do and get to what you need to do. You need to focus on markets that have potential customers, therefore the market is not too competitive, but still has decent search volume. During your research you should also begin looking for products to sell.

That was very informative, if I may also add, it will also be to the future seller's advantage if a thorough research of his target market is done prior to locating a good supplier, this way, the seller will already have a general idea of the current prices prevailing in the market and would just need to compare and decide on who is the best supplier.
