I buy a domain if I like and I can get it, if its a great domain, and expired I might try and wait for it to see if I can register it. Is backordering domains from name.com a good idea?

When you buy an expired domain name, check when it was first registered. This may help and you may find that it already has some backlinks existing. Rare situation but it does happen sometimes.

If you would like to run your search engine optimization business then you should purchase old domain names and integrate few pages with unique content on those domains.

I have bought expired domain names from 2002 and seen no ranking benefit at all, even against other similar sites (content, etc) that are newer. I'm not sure it is all it's cracked up to be.

If you buy the domain name quickly enough you should get to keep all the links to the site (unless they have been redirected).
So in theory you should get more traffic.

I would prefer to register new domains instead of buying expired domain names.

Expired domains don't always give you instant traffic - far from it. But it is a good way to get ideas, I've registered new names which were getting about 20-30 visitors per day, there are an eternal amount of new names that are very very good - look there.

There is a domain name that I would like to buy. The owner is not using it and it's already expired. Now it's in the redemption period and I am waiting to be released by registrar so I can buy it.
