    Default DMOZ Extortion

I just read this article about a DMOZ editor who removed a site because the owner refused to pay him.

I have heard of several cases like this. We can't tell whether they are true or not but the moderators at DMOZ are not that nice. It seems like they enjoy abusing their powers and earning some extra cash.

This thread has not been posted to for a while, but I wanted to add that as an editor in DMOZ I know many of the editors personally and they are hard working and honest. They are enjoying their hobby of collecting, collating and categorising web sites. None of us earn a single penny and if any editor is caught taking money or abusing editing they are banned for life. There is a button to write to DMOZ if you think an editor is doing that, we welcome those comments because if we have a bad apple we want to throw them out more than you want it.

They should report them if thats the case. I'm an editor and I never contact people who submit sites.

I am sure not all people are corrupted. Most of the people are good folks, yet there are some bad apples yes.

I personally have good and bad experience with DMoz.

One website I have was submitted years ago which gets 50k+ uniques per months yet not approved. Another site I have little over a year got approved.

I am not too much up for free things. I strongly believe editors at DMOz should get paid, only then the quality could be confirmed.

If you suggested the site more than 4 years ago, please do so again, we lost all suggestions in a great crash around that time.

DMOZ is not free, with the inference that site offers are used, it is free to submit and we do not charge for any sites listed, but we do exercise editorial discretion about where we edit, what sites we use and where we get the sites from and the suggestions pool is only one source.

If being paid makes for a better directory, why does Google not switch to something like Best of the Web? Would I do anymore if they paid me, could I do any more if they paid me, would I do any better if they paid me? The answer is no. Most of the editors at DMOZ put in hours and hourts of their spare time, for why? Because we enjoy what we do. What you want is a swish directory that carries all the standing we have because of our focus on end user and not webmasters and for submitted sites to be listed. Not possible.

The other problem is that many of the editors would walk if the directory charged for submissions, listings or offered payment to editors. So the remaining editors would have to work considerably harder to stand still and if offering payment attracts editors who would then train them and would paid editors really have the interest and knowledge and passion for their categories that we do because it is our hobby.

Web Log Directory DMOZ Open access to other classifications classified directory sites call to get more sites in more promotional opportunities. Overall, however, at present classified directory of the Web site to promote the effect of far less technical in nature such as google search engine.

Shoemoney made up the extortion claim as a brilliant piece of link baiting. I guess you guys fell for it as well and provided him with another link.

I would like to say that ShoeMoney blog is not listable by any mean. In fact it was never listed to remove as claimed. That site had no Unique content, too many affiliate links which violates DMOZ submission rules. So the claim to get removed is totally fake. That site was never listed in DMOZ.

If the blog writer had little decency he could afford his time to reveal the email in proper format and the ODP editor who asked for bribe. But he did not. This means he want to lift his blog up in Google SERP for negative keyword search for DMOZ. This is very nonsense thing most of the blog writers are doing to gain public attention for nothing.

I dont see any facts? What i see are claims and repeated claims...but no facts. Show me one editors name that has done something corrupt and show me one site url improperly listed.....now those would be facts and something to act upon

Freelancer....i see many people claiming o be editors and saying they can list sites, i wonder if some or most are simply scammers making unfounded claims?

No doubt there has to be a corrupt editor in the size of the editing community that DMOZ has. They would love to ctach them if they truly are corrupt, so in that case, use the DMOZ site to report corruption....but you need facts, not hearsay, not links to facts on other forums......
