Get into DMOZ - What You Need to Do
Another day, another screwed DMOZ submission
It's another day and more submissions are lining my queues. I go to a cafe with free internet access and cute college age kids behind the counter, and log in to one of my dmoz accounts using firefox to spoof the OS and browser. Then I delete a handful of listings starting from the top without even looking at them. The next batch I include but I make sure to drain the listings of any useful keywords. The next bunch I keep on hold for the next time. I have a few listings that have been on hold for, I kid you not, eighteen months.
Get off your behind - Become a DMOZ editor!
I don't understand how so many webmasters can be so meek to submit their websites week after week and hope, like the old ladies at church who light a candle so that God will be kind to them and let them go a week without pissing their beds. Who are these webmasters? Why are you so meek? It's already established that you are being laughed at. Next week I will show you how DMOZ editors are spam reporting your sites to Google. Why do you put up with this abuse?
It's time you seized control of your own destiny, it's time you became a DMOZ editor, even if you have a spammy network. Quality doesn't matter. Just get in there and let a whole bunch of sites get in, including yours, then walk away from the account. It's that easy, so what are you waiting for? .....................................

18 months? Is that all? I have been submitting my site to DMOZ for almost 3 years and still can not get in. I think that directory is some kind of myth. After my last submission I decided that was it, never again will I submit my site.

I tried one two years ago. Never got listed. Recently I had a little chat with a DMoz editor who happen to be working for another category I am interested in. He mentioned when I submitted the site it was quite new and new sites are very less likely to get approved.
I would agree with him. But when I looked at the listings on that category I found quite a few sites which are not good at all(quality wise).

I really don't think about DMOZ now for a long time, it's just not an extraordinary directory to me now.

If you applied to be an editor then you get feedback, saying if you have been accepted or not and if you do not, which sometimes happens through gliches, then go to resource zone and ask.
We do not respond to site sugestions after the acknowledgement when you first suggest the site, neither do we inform if a site is accepted or rejected. Reviews can take up to many years, not because we are lazy, how can an ynpaid editor be lazy? DMOZ is our spare time hobby that we receive no payment for. It is a great hooby and great fun.

Unless you were told NOT to reapply you can keep doing so. But do read the reasons that may apply to your refusal. You might like to note some of the tips I list below, but I have to say that I do not look at new applications, I am not senior enough to do that.
1. We are always looking for new editors, quite desperate in some areas, but we still apply a high criteria for people applying. Many people find they have to apply more than once before they are accepted, so if you get a refusal, look at the information offered and try again.
2. Pick a category with between 50 and 100 listed sites INCLUDING any sub categories. The logic of this is that new editors are not let loose on massive categories, but if it is too small an new editor will not have chance to develop the category.
3. You will need 3 sites that are a very good fit to the category you have applied for. One can be your own. We are allowed to list our own sites so long as we are not seen to favour our site. We NEVER cool our own sites or ask anyone else to do so.
4. Work out the reason you want to edit. To get your own site listed is not a good one. You will need to show that you want to edit and you want to build up the category that you are applying for.
5. Look at the sites that are already listed and see how they are described and titled, check that against our guidelines Open Directory Editorial Guidelines - Editing Style. Not all sections have very good examples of how to title and describe a site and if the section you have chosen is not good then comment on that and point to a couple you would change because they do not comply with guidelines.
6. Make sure that your spelling and grammar on the title and description is good.
7. Be honest about ANY affiliations you have with other web sites.
I am told that what the editors who work on this basically look for is people who are honest, good grammar, can spell and can follow the written instructions and want to edit.

It beggars belief, that you have one site listed and another that has not yet been listed and DMOZ is corrupt?
What do you do with your spare time? Can I come round and tell you how to spend it? We work in our spare time, no financial rewards and because we do not list your site we are corrupt.
I am glad DMOZ functions in such a way that we have no concern about any value we might add to site and that we do not offer a listing service to site owners. You can suggest a site, but that is all it is a suggestion.

If that is addressed to me, then 'No' it is not easy to get accepted as an editor in any category and in some it is impossible for a newbie to be accepted. I have offered some tips earlier in the thread if you want to apply I would look at them closely. One other tip is that if you offer for a Regional category, say your home city, town or village, then finding appropriate sites can be easier and then when you have mastered the basics of editing you can apply for more responsibilities in new areas. Yes even we as editors have to apply for new permissions. We do have over 200 editors that are regarded as senior enough to allow to edit anywhere.Do you think, is it easy to become DMOZ editor for any category in the directory
