Thread: What is the purpose of directories?

Targetted directories can be a great way of finding exactly what you want. there will always be se spam. Thats our job. We have to stay one step ahead of the se's to maintain our rankings. Maybe the only way to avoid it is to have massive directories that are human edited. there would be no spam or corruption then and you would be able to find exactly what you want. Just like DMOZ.If a directory is well maintained it can be a far more useful tool than a search engine.

directory submission is a long term process but it will help lot to get traffic and also to gain backlinks.

directories are the first and basic step of off-page SEO.It helps in the traffic and links or indexing.

It's very important if one really has submitted to high quality free/paid directories. No benefits getting listed from link farms, spamming directories, low quality directories or directories with same/duplicate categories and stuff.

You are right about the directory submission and listing. Still, the Online world has changed now. Now, the social bookmarking sites have taken place of directories if we see it in a broader spectrum. The article directories are playing crucial role. However, the directory submission this way seems a pinch of salt to the tub of flour.

Other people have mentioned traffic in this thread, but how much do you actually get from directories? For me it is a tiny amount.

I think that Directories helped us to promote our sites, submit Url's and develop google page rank as well. So we tried to promote our sites in high page rank directories.

Directories are mainly for backlinks to give your website more presence on the internet.
They can also direct trafic to the site, but not many people use them for this purpose.
