Depends on your application size and future scalablity. I think you are talking about web application...
and it depends on the script asp.net or php.
if it is a very small application you could use ms access with asp.net or php.
if you are planning for a large volume project and future scalability then opt for
ms sql and asp.net
or
mysql and php.
Oracle is for extremely large applications

I'd agree with the previous poster if talking about Web apps. For desktop apps, My SQL and Oracle are overkill. I would give Access a miss and go with something that's easily deployable like VistaDB.

Thanks for your answers Guys!
I was asking for both applications - Web and windows.
If I want to develop an e-commerce web application then which would be better?
And if I want to develop a MIS then which one would be better?
Your answers will give me an idea of how to choose database depending on apps..

Depends what you're planning on making e.g for php scripts on a website, MySQL is the best. For ASP.net driven apps MSSQL or access is the best.

I'd stay away from MSSQL. I've ran databases long ago with MSSQL and we've been exploited many times. I find MYSQL more reliable and safe.

Hi.. very intelligent question.
According to me, you should use access database in small projects or websites.
If you are going for websites then MySQL is suitable and Oracle is preferred for very high databases..
Generally, you should use MySQL database for web applications.
