I think Java is good but with .NET technology you get a pretty quick & useful support from Microsoft. With MS you will feel that you are paying the cost for the right technology which is useful also.

I think Java is much better technology for web development than .Net as Java is a open source technology so it is platform independent technology while .Net is a product of Microsoft which is a closed source technology, so the product made through this technology can be used only on windows....
