Blog Commenting: How to Leave A Good Comment
I spent most of my morning and about 2 cups of coffee typing up this article that I just posted on my blog.
It's about blog commenting and the such, and tips to make a good comment that will get earn you a backlink.
--------------------------
We all know that blog commenting is good for link building (if the blog has the lack of the nofollow attribute) and exposing your website to the other readers of that specific blog, but most people doing link building don't know how to leave a good comment that will get their comment approved (if the blog author has enabled moderation).
Now to coincide what I just stated, blog commenting shouldn't be just all about link building. Most blog owners can determine whether you (the commenter) are actually paying attention to the blog post or just writing a bunch of gibberish making it sound like you read the post. This isn't a good idea to do, and you should definitely read the blog post first and comment later.
I've gotten contacted before when I owned blackwaterblog.com about why that persons comment was rejected, and it was quite simple and I told them.
Most comments that are rejected in moderation queue fit into one of any of these categories:
* Spam
* Poor language skills (in relation to whatever language the blog is in)
* A different language from what the blog is written in
* Completely unrelated comment in relevance to the post in question
* Using your keyword as your "Name" (some authors don't allow this period)
* Having a URL that links to a bad website (such as pornography)
* Link dropping inside the comment itself
* Insulting the blog author (I've had some people do this to me before)
* All of the above
* Etc..
In order to provide yourself a good chance at having your comment approved, which earns you that backlink, here are a few simple tips to make a good comment that the blog author will appreciate:
* DO NOT SPAM. This is a major one. Try to write out a decent comment, a few sentences relating to the blog post in question. Comments such as "thank you", "thanks", or any other few word comments usually get rejected.
* Language skills, a definite must. If the blog is written in English, do proper English in your comment. Same rule applies to other languages.
* Different language. Why bother leaving a comment in a foreign language if the blog is in English? Same applies to other language blogs. Stick to your own language that you are most proficient in.
* Relevance. If the blog post is about say cars, and you're going off commenting about motorcycles, that is bad and will get your comment rejected. As they say on forum threads, STAY ON TOPIC.
* Keyword as your "Name". This is all fine and dandy, but some blog authors don't allow the use of keywords and will only approve comments from a person that supplies their real name. Make sure to check before hand if they have any commenting etiquette guidelines or commenting rules.
* Bad URLs. Using a URL that leads to a bad site that as pornography will get your comment rejected pretty much instantly. Search engines don't like that stuff, and blog authors don't like having their sites linking to it either. They will get penalized and/or banned by the search engines.
* Link dropping. If you're allowed a URL attached to your Name field, why do you have to drop links inside the comments? Don't do it, ever.
* Insulting the blog author. Don't do it, period. It will get you banned from the blog, and possibly a bad reputation that will get you barred from other blogs too.
That pretty much sums up on what to do and what not to do while leaving a comment on a blog. Remember that you shouldn't just comment on a blog for the sake of trying to get a backlink. I comment on other blogs myself regardless of whether it is "dofollow" or not, because it makes the author happy and makes their site more respectable.

yup nice post i think good insights on blog commenting. I second all of your Pet Peeves. If you want people to take the time to leave a comment on your blog you need to minimize the barriers for them to do so.

I think, we need to judge what we have to write in the comment / we don't. Only promotional activity / comments mostly deleted through the admin.

Nice advice... link dropping is very bad for example --- Hey! I've written about the same thing... check it out here - Example Web Page --- people generally ignore these comments.
To be a good commenter you should read the other comments also and not only the blog post.... it is the comment section where the interesting discussions take place.
