Which web server is the best???
I have been searching to know what web servers the top websites like youtube, wikipedia, amazon, photobucket, aol are working in. I came to know all these details and whois lookup of these sites from many statistical sites like Apache usage stats . At the same time, sites like msn and friendster are using Microsoft IIS . Can anybody tell me which is the best web server?? Thanks in advance!!

It depends if you want to work in a Linux or Windows environment.

There is no "best" webserver. Apache, nginx, litespeed or IIS... it depends on your needs and which language your site uses (PHP, HTML, ASP.NET or whatever).
As a Front-End Developer with a lot of experience in Front-End Performance Optimizing I am recommending Apache (on a Debian 5.0 OS for example).
Apache is very good for optimizing.
We only have dedicated servers so I can not speak about shared hosting, sorry.

As said by cms, theres not "best" webserver. Of course we all have our favorite, and mine is litespeed. All webservers have pros and cons.

Apache is always on top, no comparison bt apache and any other webserver, 80% websites are using apache as their webserver, coz of its reliability, customization, security, faster output.

Apache is most popular web server. The Apache server Foundation provides support for the Apache community of open-source software projects. The Apache web server are characterized by a collaborative, consensus based development process, an open and pragmatic software license, and a desire to create high quality software that leads the way in its field.

Same here, there isn't one that is anywhere near as reliable or popular.

Choosing a web server depends on the platform you choose for your website. IMO, both Apache and Microsoft IIS are good web servers.
