If you are getting shared hosting you wont have to worry about this much, just check out the plan details on the company website.

You gotta be really careful with the features specially if you are buying VPS hosting, dedicated hosting, or similar hosting packages. Most of the time you have to pay for the additional software you need. Make sure you talk to the customer support to know how much you have to pay.

I personally got some some bizarre experience buying VPS hosting. After I bought VPS hosting I find out the customer support gave me incorrect info.

Check out how much it gonna cost. Compare prices from different companies.

Reputation
Check out the reviews online. Lot of times reviews are paid, so you gotta be careful. You can always ask fellow forum members to learn about their experience on a hosting company. Check out if a company hosted any reputed websites in the past.

How Long in Business
I take this very seriously along with reputation. A company in business for long time means they been making a significant number of hosting clients happy.
